Marine Science Careers: a Sea Grant Guide to Ocean Opportunities
Produced in 1996 by the National Sea Grant Program, this 40 page booklet is primarily a compilation of interviews with 38 people who work in the marine sciences. Occupations vary from marine biologist to naval architect to lifeguard. Each person was asked the following set of questions:
- What degrees do you hold (or are you working toward) and from what schools?
-
What is your current job and what does it entail?
-
What was the key factor in your career decision?
-
What do you like most about your career?
-
What do you like least about your career?
-
What do you do to relax?
-
Who are your heroes/heroines?
-
What advice would you give a high school student who expressed an interest in pursuing a career in your field?
-
Are career opportunities in your field increasing or decreasing and why?
-
What will you be doing 10 years from today?
Sea Grant is working on a web based version of the publication, and it is expected to become available sometime during the summer of 1998. One of the participants in the project has put his answers to the interview questions on the web. They are available here.
